Longjohn Beanie – My First Tested Pattern

First of all I need to disclose something. I HATE the word beanie. To me beanie does not refer to this kind of hat, but apparently it does indicate a toque (the Canadian/French-Canadian word for this kind of hat), to the rest of the world, so beanie it is.

Ok, now that’s out of the way I can continue talking about this particular toque – the Longjohn Beanie. I love waffles, waffle-weave shirts, and waffle-weave pyjamas. There is a gorgeous waffle stitch in crochet and I wanted a knit version of it, and then came across this one. I actually had another intention for this stitch that is hopefully still to come, but I figured a good test run for it would be as a toque. So why isn’t it called the Waffle Beanie? There were too many with that name out there already. And since one of the things that inspired this design is pyjamas, I went with an alternate term – longjohns, because the long underwear beanie sounds really weird…

There are 2 sizes written for the Longjohn Beanie, along with instructions to adjust the length and circumference. Honestly the reason there is a toddler/child size is because I started making an adult size in the fig colour of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (affiliate link) I had, but there wasn’t enough to make an adult sized hat, and I still wanted to use that colour.

Check out the many Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Colours! (affiliate link)

Both sizes of the Longjohn Beanie knit up really, really quickly. And another piece of good news? You can use that to your advantage as you are welcome to add this design into your market lineup as a finished item! I would recommend a starting price for a pom-less hat of at least $40 to cover your materials, time, and other business costs.

I really have to thank my testers for giving me such a smooth first pattern test experience being on the other side of the pattern! It was such a relief to have people apply to test, and then have everyone get their notes in on time, a definite help!

I hope you enjoy making this toque/hat/beanie and I look forward to seeing your versions of the Longjohn Beanie so remember to tag me in your posts and use #longjohnbeanie and #knittleandpearl! Get the pattern on Ravelry now or add it to your favourites!
