    Fibre Fairs

If you saw my Instagram stories, you know last weekend, while much of the knitting world was at Rhinebeck, Calgary was having the fall edition of Fibre Shindig. (P.S. Fibre is the Canadian/French way of spelling fiber). This was the 3rd time I’ve gone, and without question, it’s the most yarn I’ve ever bought at once. BUT, I actually have a plan for all the yarn I got. And because Fibre Fairs are scheduled, you can plan for the spending you may do, and use something like my Yarn Savings Plan. I know the ‘Rhinebeck Sweater’ is a really big deal, but Fibre Fairs in general are a great place…

    The K/CAL: Participant Edition

Signing up to be part of a Knit-a-long (KAL) or Crochet-a-long (CAL) is a pretty low commitment event. You don’t have to pay anything extra, you’re just buying the pattern (often at a discount!) and yarn and making along with some new friends. Often A LOT of them! There have been a couple of these events lately in the maker world done by some pretty big names like TL Yarn Crafts  (Coles River CAL) and Knitatude (My Beginner Raglan KAL). Below are 5 reasons joining a KAL or CAL is a great a idea! 5 Reasons to Join a KAL or CAL Motivation – If you saw my post on…

It’s quite simple actually. Every time I see yarn that I would have bought if I’d seen it during my…

    Free Patterns: Using Them

FREE! Everyone’s favourite word. For some reason us makers will spend hundreds of dollars on yarn, but we often balk at spending $5 to $10 on a pattern. Believe me that’s not a judgement, this is me, exactly. This means if there’s not a specific pattern we’re wanting to make, we’ll use that handy filter feature on Ravelry to just find the free patterns, sorting through them to try to find that one that might work for us. I did this to make some stay-put toddler mittens for my friend’s daughter, my “niece”. I found one with a description that seemed like it would answer the call of “not being…

Knit Kits – Part 1: We Are Knitters

Knit kits were what took me from an occasional hobby-ist to a fully obsessed knitter. There are a lot of different companies that offer kits for both knitters and crocheters, and some for other needle crafts as well.  I have mostly stuck to kits from We Are Knitters, but have also purchased from Lion Brand.  Below rather than reviewing the individual kits (which may come later), I’ll give my pros and cons of kits companies’ kits in general.  These may also be things to consider if you are a designer looking at working with these companies. We Are Knitters Note: I haven’t received anything from We Are Knitters, I actually…
