Broomsticks Washcloth

Perhaps my favourite of my October collection of washcloths, this washcloth adds one more technique to the simple knits and purls to create the broomsticks, to go with the Candy Corn Washcloth and Pumpkin Patch Washcloth.

Broomsticks are of course the chosen transportation method of witches, an important component of the games of Quidditch and curling, and as I’ve been reminded this week as I’ve used my broom every day – a necessary piece of equipment for snow removal on many kinds of walkways around the world. While this washcloth is less reversible than the Pumpkin Patch and Candy Corn ones, it has some reversibility to it.

Pattern

Gauge: 2″ x 2″ (5 cm x 5 cm) = 9 stitches x 13 rows in stockinette (blocked)
Finished measurements: 8.5″ x 7.5″ (21.6 cm x 19 cm)

Materials:

  • 4.5 mm needles (US 7)
  • ~ 30 g / 51 yds worsted weight cotton (I used Bernat Handicrafter, other options could include Lion Brand Re-Up or Knit Picks Dishie (affiliate links))
  • Blocking mat
  • Blocking pins
  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations used:
– k: knit
– p: purl
Wrap 5: *with yarn in back slip 5 sts purlwise. Bring the yarn to the front and slip the 5 stitches back to the left needle.* Repeat from * to *. Bring yarn to front and resume pattern. See pictures below.

Start of the wrap stitch for the knit Broomsticks washcloth.
Pass yarn behind the 5 slipped stitches, then bring yarn to the front.
Second step of the wrap stitch for knitting the Broomsticks washcloth.
Slip stitches back to the left needle and bring yarn to the back.
Finished wrap stitch for the Broomsticks washcloth.
When finished you will have 2 wraps on the right side of your work.
Finished wrap stitch on the wrong side of your work for the Broomsticks washcloth.
When finished you will have 3 wraps on the wrong side of your work.

Pattern:
Cast on 39 sts (I like the long-tail cast on, the cable cast on would also look good).
R1-5: K all sts.
R6: K4, p31, k4.
R7: K all sts.

Start the first row of broomsticks:
R8: K4, p3, k5, p5, k5, p5, k5, p3, k4.
R9: K4, k3, p5, k5, p5, k5, p5, k3, k4.
R10-13: repeat R8 & R9.
R14: K4, p3, wrap 5, p5, wrap 5, p5, wrap 5, p3, k4.
R15: K4, k4, p3, k7, p3, k7, p3, k4, k4.
R16: K4, p4, k3, p7, k3, p7, k3, p4, k4.
R17: K4, k5, p1, k9, p1, k9, p1, k5, k4.
R18: K4, p5, k1, p9, k1, p9, k1, p5, k4.
R19-25: Repeat R17 & R18.
R26: K4, p31, k4.
R27: K all sts.

Start 2nd row of broomsticks:
R28-47: Repeat R8 through R27.

Finish off your Broomsticks Washcloth:
R48-51: K all sts.
Bind off all sts.

Unblocked knit Broomsticks Washcloth.

Use a tapestry needle to weave in your ends, then you will need to give it a quick steam block to make it lie flat!
