Pattern Testing the Mustang Mitts

When I saw Rachael’s call for testers for the Mustang Mitts pattern, I had to apply because I loved the detail on the back of the hand so much, and I really wanted to know how she did the flap on what I call “Scrooge gloves”.

For the cuff Rachael recommends learning to cable without a cable needle. I watched one video, tried it a couple times and decided I wasn’t into constantly picking up dropped stitches while I attempted to learn it, so went for the traditional cable needle approach. The cabled cuff makes for a really nice variation on the ribbed cuff.

I have to admit, I did break my yarn fast (kinda) to test these mitts. But I got a very economical yarn – Estelle DK. Which is very soft, has some wool content, and is apparently machine washable! If you don’t have DK in your stash, I’d recommend heading to your LYS because Michael’s has a terrible selection of DK weight yarn.

I don’t think this was the intention, since its not reflected in the name, but since I’m in “all things Christmas” mode I kind of think the design on the back of the hand looks like a Christmas tree! And I really appreciate that the detail looks like it comes off of the cables of the cuff.

To me thumbs are the heel of mittens. And I have to say everything about these mitts goes quickly, even the thumb. And even better, I love that Rachael put in the instructions to do the thumb before you start the flap. It’s just so much better than getting to the end and having this tiny little bit of work to do that somehow seems like more work than it is.

If you’re still looking for possible Christmas gifts for any females in your life I would definitely recommend the Mustang Mitts as a quick knit for gifting!
