Pattern Testing the November Mornings Socks

Over a year ago I saw a testing call by Orange Knits for a new pair of socks. I had recently made the first of my Aine socks, which also happen to be one of my favourite pairs of a friends’ socks, so I thought I’d take this opportunity to try another of Mara’s designs, the November Mornings socks.

Now I have had a few brilliant yarn choices to go with patterns. My English Garden Reading Socks and Vanilla Spice Socks being a couple examples. I didn’t want to buy new yarn for this test, so I was picking from a limited selection of DK yarns in my stash. I settled on one that I really love – Angkor Wat by Ancient Arts Yarn. It has most of my favourite colours in it – several shades of purple and a light pink. Unfortunately the frequent colour changes mean that the particular pattern of this sock isn’t very visible.

This was the first time I’d done a short row heel, and though I’ve done it once more since this sock, I’m still not sure how I feel about it. There is an additional modification to the heel that does make it fit differently than just a straight short row heel.

One feature that I think is absolutely amazing is the sole of this sock. I know this is referred to as a slipper sock, and the sole is what really makes this sock fit that description. I haven’t made any other sock that isn’t just stockinette on the sole, so I found this really novel, and cozy!

Originally these socks had a different working name, but I really love the name Mara ended up choosing of November Mornings. Perfect for a slipper sock.
