Mini Hearts Socks – New Pattern

Mini Hearts Socks knit in pink, with the left foot sole down, and the right foot sole in.

When I have ideas for new textures I typically test them out in what I refer to as a “yarn doodle”. I just have leftover yarn that I leave on spare needles so I can try out new ideas because things look different between your head and a drawing, and between a drawing and actual knitting. When I was testing some ideas for hearts I tried the stitch pattern from the Little Hearts Washcloth in both sock yarn and worsted weight cotton I also tried another version of a heart. It didn’t look good in worsted weight cotton, but I did like it in sock yarn. The idea for this stitch pattern in my head was the answer to the question – How can I make the simplest heart possible?

Once the heart was figured out, the other aspects of the sock needed to be figured out. I landed on what I believe is my favourite kind of sock ribbing – 2×1. Because I didn’t want to put the mini hearts all the way around the leg, I needed something to divide the front and back of the sock. Garter stitch isn’t my favourite in all situations, particularly with chunkier yarns, or in large sections, BUT as a small section, with thin yarn, like a border on a sock, LOVE it!

Like my Opposition Socks, the relatively short repeat to make the two offset rows of mini hearts knit up really fast. There’s just something about seeing your progress in short sections that really keeps you going!

If you’ve read any other blog posts about socks, you might remember that heel flaps are one of my favourite things about socks. And one of my favourite heel flaps is the eye of partridge heel flap. It’s always important to me that a heel flap goes well with the rest of the sock. At least in my own head! I love that the eye of partridge stitch pattern is really subtle, but is still a somewhat unique pattern, meaning it wouldn’t compete or clash with the hearts.

Because of the name and stitch pattern I of course chose pink yarn, and pink socks in general are just my favourite. Of course there is no law saying that hearts have to be pink, or any other colour and luckily my testers chose a variety of colours for their socks. Check out their work on Ravelry, or on Instagram using #MiniHeartsSocks. Why colour will you make your socks in?
